“August the Strong”: First ship to cross the Carola Bridge

Yesterday, on January 28, 2025, the moment finally arrived: Our saloon ship “August der Starke” became the first ship in more than four and a half months to pass the partially collapsed Carola Bridge in Dresden. A moving moment that not only marked the end of a long wait, but also the starting signal for an exciting transformation. This passage paves the way for the ship’s comprehensive reconstruction at the Laubegast shipyard.

Following the partial collapse of the Carola Bridge, after intensive securing and rescue work, the passage was finally reopened, albeit with restrictions. The moment of the first passage was marked by excitement and relief for all involved.

Now a new chapter begins for our “August.” The upcoming modernization promises an impressive transformation: In addition to extensive technical upgrades, the interior and exterior areas will be redesigned to offer our guests an even more exclusive and comfortable experience. A key element of the work is the timely removal of the Schottel propulsion units, which will undergo a general overhaul. But that’s just the beginning: The onboard electrical system will be replaced, the ship will receive a sprinkler system, the engine system will be modernized, and the salons and sun deck will be completely redesigned – inspired by the stylish design of its sister ship, the “Gräfin Cosel.”

The big goal has been set: By May 1st, “August the Strong” should shine in new splendor and be ready in time for the traditional naval parade on the Terrassenufer.
